BOOK TRAILER: Sheriff Jedediah Spade's Catalog of Netherworld Monstrosities
Deep inside, every child knows, there is far more magic and enchantment, hidden in the corners of the earth, than adults are willing to admit.
Somewhere out there, mysterious coastlines are plundered by cursed pirate ships, woodlands shroud kingdoms and castles you can’t find on any map, and deep in Old West mountain passes, gunfighters duel on forgotten stagecoach roads.
All kids instinctively sense, these wondrous places still exist, and if you muster the courage to venture over just the right sliver of the horizon, you will find lands of adventure, grownups pretend to know nothing about.
When four young friends brave a quest into the desert, seeking such forbidden country, they learn our world is far bigger than they ever dreamed possible, and monsters under the bed are child’s play, compared to the netherworld monstrosities lurking around ghosttowns.

A Tribute to Danny Blitz

In October 2017, a friend I had known for 25 years, Mike Bostwick, released a podcast praising me and our friendship. Not only was his salute unexpected and touching, it was among the kindest gestures anyone has ever shown me. His altruism inspired me to return the favor, by celebrating people who changed the trajectory of my life. Subscribe to my Blog: www.InkShard.com Become my fan on GoodRea...

How do you write a book?
Переглядів 5349 років тому
People frequently want creative writing advice and tips for writing a novel. They are curious about the source of ideas or the inspiration for characters. However, this video covers the "how" in a technical sense. What kind of tools are used in the physical act of writing. Pens? Laptops? Dictation? A less typical but equally important article of hints and suggestions. ORIGINAL BLOG ENTRY WITH C...

One of the most valuable lessons I ever learned about design wasn't something I was taught in an art class. It was information I learned when I began to study medieval heraldry in the Society for Creative Anachronism. Learn why a book cover and a street sign and a cost of arms on a battlefield are all closely related things. Most important of all, if you're a self-published author, learn why yo...
With enemies like that, who needs friends?

Sometimes family and friends are not our cheerleaders. Often, those people who are supposed to be the most uplifting and supportive end up being the ones who never have any faith in us. When the people closest to you never stand behind you and your dreams, how do you find the fortitude to carry on and prevail? You Have Been Lied to About Storytelling

We often hear about "Three Act Structures" and "The Hero's Journey" as the prevalent motif in storytelling. These things are great patterns to follow, but they are over-complicated. The essence of great storytelling is far more simplistic. Everything we are taught about writing is wrong. There are only two things you need to make a great story... One of the most famous and infamous books of the 20th century, "The Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger has been reviewed, criticized, banned, and scrutinized for decades. Why is the most common writing advice the worst?
Переглядів 7639 років тому
When new writers are looking for advice on writing ,some of the most common tips are terrible. Often repeated suggestions of how to become a better writer don't hold up under scrutiny. To become a better author, it's best to find better guidance. "Write What You Know" is misleading and "Read More Than You Write" is simply illogical. In 1983 my Dad pinched it off of his best friend's bookshelf. In 2016 he chucked it on the end of my bed and told me he thought I'd enjoy it. I read the first chapter and decided that even though I was hungover I needed to get up and find a better location to read it. I chucked it in my bag and went and sat at the top of the white cliffs of Dover and read it cover to cover, a few days later I did the same again. I must have read it about 12 times that summer while I was 18. I plan on throwing at my own hungover childrens' feet one day and I hope it has as greater affect on them as it did my Father and me.

Randomly picked up this book on a train ride in India as a bewildered 22-year old, and finished it before I reached my destination. It always stuck with me, especially the part regarding Ulfire and Jale (but also the stars/suns Branchspell and Alppain and their effects, omg). Thought about it today and sought out a review and was not emotionally disappointed, thanks!

For jale and ulfire, you could make a 3-D film, and have the object be different colors in each eye. I have had experience of this effect, using the View-Master toy, and I interpreted it as a single color.

I sold Danny his first electric guitar, having known him in High School. He had previously played acoustic, because that was what his mother wanted him to play, and he knew a bunch of John Denvers songs. A couple of our teachers and I encouraged him to persue music, which irritated his parents, who thought he should be a doctor or some such. We has a bit of a possee back then, with Mike Daniels, and some others, and he eventually left Texas to chase his dream. That band was called The Blitz, and that's where his stage name came from. He would sometimes come back to Texas and we would get some dinner or something. He had his tumor, and bounced back for quite a long time aside from his paralysis. He then had a recurrance, went home to his Mom, and stayed with her until he passed away. Mike and Is visited him at her house, and carried his casket along with his other Texas friends.

For fun I made the epub 3 version. Aside from the version number and putting in a lot of "text/html;" in the meta headers and a few minor changes, you have to make a nav.xhtml file instead of the toc.ncx file for the table of contents. It passes the java epubcheck program. For reference I had a conversion made from calibre. I sent it to my kindle app without a problem. You can actually use javascript in epub3 and I think Apple Book supports it, so there's some potential for cool stuff.

Theres an anime version of it called "Little Princess Sara"that made an insane change to the ending. They had Sara reward an unapologetic Miss Minchin with £100,000 reward for the relentless child abuse, which they took up a notch in that version. There they had Minchin actually throw Sara out on the street and she almost died sleeping in a barn with no roof. That one change of rewarding the villain made the entire story not work. That and the fact that they introduced a young male friend Sara met on her errands with a loving family of her own who actually offered to take her in but she rejected it for no reason other than plot requirement. I don't know if something got lost in translation between Japanese and English culture, but they just did not get it. The Hollywood changes is a change I understand for modern movie audiences even though it does weaken the story a little it doesn't destroy the story's core themes, which is fundamentally a morality tale. Get that wrong and nothing else works.

I often wonder why the book cover has got a white feather gently falling from above . I have seen that falling feather a few times . Blessings!

I never got to have dinner with Harlan, but I met him at a number of book signings at Dangerous Visions Bookstore in Sherman Oaks,California. I found him to be friendly, affable and often hilarious. I also met Susan, who was utterly charming and gracious. I miss them both deeply. Harlan was a great influence on my own writing as well. My two big idols are Harlan and Michael Moorcock, and thanks to DV, I was lucky enough to meet them both, and a lot more, including: Michael Resnick; Alan Dean Foster; Spider Robinson; Kim Stanley Robinson; Somtow Sucharitkul; Larry Niven; Jerry Pournelle; J. Michael Straczynski; Gregory Branford; Greg Bear; Gene Wolfe; Esther Friesner; Connie Willis and the (then) breathtakingly lovely Kristine Kathryn Rusch. I can concur with what this guy felt at that special dinner, because, much to my surprise and amazement, Michael Moorcock liked my “steampunk dragon adventure,” “The Dragon Groom’s Tale.” I still haven’t found a publisher or an agent, but I am still trying. After all, if an SFWA Grand Master liked it, my work cannot be total crap!😂

Guess a necro comment, but I can empathize with having to slog through those Advanced books without a lifeline. While it's easy now to find all of the information and elaborations needed online, I feel some of that pure wonder of the game got lost along the way, as the secrets and mystery have been laid bare and debated to death. I'm glad I learned it when I did back then, without Google to search up every time I got stuck. Felt more personal in a way.
